Medicare Part A Coverage

Medicare Part A coverage includes hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, nursing home care, home health care, and hospice care. If the doctor determines you need an inpatient hospital stay, you must meet your deductible of $1,288. This deductible covers a stay that is between one to sixty days long. This deductible must be met every benefit period. A hospital stay that is longer has another deductible. If you must stay between sixty to ninety days, you must pay $322 per day coinsurance. For each day beyond day 91, you must pay a coinsurance rate of $644 per lifetime reserve day.  An individual only has sixty lifetime reserve days over the course of their lifetime.

Medicare Part A coverage includes up to 100 days in a skilled nursing facility per benefit period. First, the individual must have a qualifying hospital stay of at least 3 days. From day 1 through day 20, there is not a deductible to be met by the Medicare beneficiary. After day 20, a deductible of $161 per day must be met with a potential co-payment of as much as $12,880. This includes day 21 through day 100.  After day 100 no expenses will be covered by Medicare. You will be responsible for all expenses.
Medicare Part A coverage includes hospice care costs. A person can choose hospice care when a doctor has determined that they have 6 months or less to live. Hospice care requires a person to only get medications and care that will make them more comfortable. Hospice care is not to treat any illness or work towards a cure for the illness. At any time, a person can choose to discontinue hospice care.Patients receiving hospice care must pay $5 per prescription. Most medications will include pain medications and medications to help the individual feel more comfortable during their terminal illness.

This coverage also pays for Durable Medical Equipment ordered by a physician. The Medicare beneficiary will be responsible for 20% of the costs for the Durable Medical Equipment.
